EVENT DETAILS:
Join us for UCSD Near You in New York with New York Mets Statistical Analyst, Ben Baumer '03.
How can we improve our understanding of the game of baseball through the use of statistics? Why apply statistical methods to baseball and which stats are important? Sabermetrics, derived from the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR), is the analysis of baseball through objective evidence, especially statistical methods. Enjoy a discussion about how the discrete nature of one of American's favorite pastimes makes it an ideal setting for probability models, and how correlations of certain statistics can help us discern skill from luck.
Come learn about Ben's work with The Mets as their statistical analyst and hear about how he advises the GM on player evaluations and more!
Bio:
Benjamin Baumer is a statistical analyst for the New York Mets reporting directly to General Manager, Omar Minaya. He received a BA in Economics from Wesleyan, a MA in Applied Mathematics from UC San Diego and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics at The City University of New York Graduate Center.
Baumer also teaches elementary statistics and probability at Hunter College. In the field of math, his interests include graph theory, combinatorics, discrete geometry and graph algorithms.
