The Alumni Founders:
Leadership, Action, Involvement

Alumni support reflects a lasting belief and confidence in UCSD,
and in the value of a degree from UCSD. A new group of donors,
the Alumni Founders, have demonstrated their belief in UCSD through
their remarkable leadership and involvement.
The Alumni Founders hold the distinction of being the first UCSD
alumni to give $1 million or more to the University. Membership
is based on cumulative giving, and the group will eventually include
the first 50 alumni whose gifts reach the $1 million mark.
The inaugural Alumni Founders include:
Sheldon Engelhorn
B.A. Biological Sciences, ’72
Engelhorn is an avid supporter of scholarship programs, and chairs the UCSD Undergraduate
Scholarship Council. He and his wife, Susan, founded the Engelhorn Family Scholarship
Fund, UCSD’s largest scholarship program designated for transfer students.
He is also a member of the Campaign Cabinet and is a UC San Diego Foundation
Trustee.
Gary E. Jacobs
B.A. Economics, ’79
An active alumni volunteer, Jacobs serves as chair of the Campaign Steering
Committee. He and his wife, Jerri-Ann, have made generous gifts to the Division
of Social Sciences, the Chancellor’s Associates, and to Friends of Judaic
Studies.
Sheri Jamieson
B.A. Anthropology, ’73
Jamieson’s generous gifts have benefited several areas of campus, including
UCSD Health Sciences’ cancer and cardiovascular centers, University Art
Gallery, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UCSD Libraries. She is also
a Silver Circle member of the Chancellor’s Associates.
Walter Munk, Ph.D.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography, ’47
Munk holds the Secretary of the Navy/Chief of Naval Operations Oceanography
Chair at the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary
Physics at Scripps. Munk and his wife, Judith, have been supporters of Scripps
and UCSD throughout the last 50 years.
Mark A. Pine
B.A. Physics, ’76
Pine and his wife, Rebecca, have given generously to the Jacobs School of Engineering,
Alumni Relations and the UCSD Fund, and they recently made a generous gift
to be used at the discretion of the UCSD chancellor. Pine is an active alumnus
in the Bay Area.
Peter Preuss
M.A. Mathematics, ’67
Preuss and his wife, Peggy, provided the leadership gift for the Preuss School,
a charter middle-high school on the UCSD campus. They are members of the UCSD
Chancellor’s Associates, Alumni Association, Board of Overseers, Campaign
Cabinet and Chancellor’s Laureates. Preuss is a UC Regent and former
Trustee of the UC San Diego Foundation.
The inaugural members of the Alumni Founders were honored during
the Alumni Association Awards for Excellence Gala
in October. |
