Rosanna
Delurgio was a huge contributor to the Triton women’s
swimming and diving team last season. The team tied for third place
in the overall standings in 2002-2003 and Delurgio will be crucial
to the team’s attempt to move even higher in the rankings this
season.
Delurgio, ’05, won national titles in the 100- and 200-yard
breaststroke, and on the way broke her own NCAA Division II record
times in both events. The standout swimmer was also a part of the
bronze-medal-winning UCSD 400-yard relay team.
Delurgio’s
success earned her a spot in the Sports Illustrated “Faces
in the Crowd” section last May and brought her a lot of added
attention. “I was a little nervous about starting the year
because of all the pressures from last season,” she said. “So
I’m focusing more on team goals and letting the stuff that
comes for me just be another benefit.”
Although Delurgio tries
to deflect attention from herself, she realizes that the quest
for another pair of titles will be more
difficult with all eyes on
her every time she enters the pool. “I think, psychologically, it will
be a bit tougher for me because of other people’s expectations, but I
realize that those expectations are mostly what I have created,” she
said.
Along with goals for the NCAA season, the junior swimmer has international
aspirations. “My
ultimate goal is to make the Olympic trials,” Delurgio said. “I
want to go to the trials and see where that can take me.”
Wherever it takes her, Delurgio is one reason to keep an eye on the Triton
pool this season.
