KICKIN’ IT
Women’s Soccer is arguably UCSD’s most successful team.
Its goal seekers have won seven NCAA Championships,
including six between 1995 and 2001. With the loss of nine seniors,
this fall will see a fresh line up led by the past two Conference
Freshman of the Year winners, Heather Szfraniec and Kelly Cochran.
Can Coach McManus’ new team score another championship this
year?
SPIKE THE PUNCH
In contrast to Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball is
being led by a quintet of returning seniors. Teresa Ohta, Bonnie
Wilson, Kendra Canape, Katie Hogan and Stacy Dunsmore are back for
their final year on the court and are psyched to take the team to
number one. They will open the 2004 season in the top five in their
division, so look for games against San Francisco State University
and Cal State University San Bernardino as they try to spike them
out of the running.
SPLASHING AROUND
Men’s Water Polo is setting out to score big this year with
a batch of freshman recruits, a pair of returning All-American
First Team seniors, and a coach with 25 years at UCSD. Since they
were knocked out of the NCAA Championships by close rival Loyola
Marymount University last season,
the new team was determined not to tread water during the summer.
The solid newcomers will hopefully be able to fill the speedos
of those who came before and propel them to the championships.
