Eight hundred cheering students witnessed a true
battle of the Tritons when a washing machine raced a sofa during
last May’s Sun God
Festival. UCSD’s first Junkyard Derby began Wednesday night
when 11 teams of students, staff, faculty and alumni scavenged for
parts through a mammoth pile of “junk” at Physical Plant
Services. The teams then had two days to build their
boxcars. Friday’s round-robin races pitted two teams at a
time, down Peterson Hall walkway to the finish line at the Geisel
end of Library Walk.  “We wanted to create something that would
engage the entire campus as well as alumni and other groups,” says
outgoing senior Ben Graham, who organized the event with Alumni
Association
student program manager Tracie Davee, “and it went off without
a hitch.” Obviously Graham was
not there when the editor of this magazine fell flat on his face
pushing our splendid alumni vehicle downhill or for the many other
spectacular crashes. But all in all it was a joyful day! Especially
for the winning Team Darkside, made up of liberal art students
and one structural engineer. Yes, liberal arts students! Want to
