A selection of fall Guardian headlines.
Watson
seeks TV policy clarity In response to multiple
communication
conflicts last year with student-run
media, Joseph W. Watson, vice chancellor of Student Affairs,
has created a committee to coordinate policies of closed-circuit
television stations on campus. The decision has in turn raised
concerns among some students and A.S. leaders. MORE
Democrats
to begin newspaper Campus College
Democrats recently began planning the start of a left-leaning
publication called the New Frontier to give liberals on campus
a counterpart to the conservative California Review. The publication,
to be printed three times a quarter, will also focus on issues
pertaining to UCSD students. MORE
Campus
bans raffles, “games of chance” Campus interpretations of California state law and
University of California policy have outlawed “games
of chance” on campus. These games include all activities
in which an item of value, usually money, is exchanged for
the chance to win another item of value, including raffles
and bingo. Most recently, the annual Muir Halloween Carnival
canceled its planned bingo game, which has traditionally accompanied
its pumpkin drop. MORE
A.S.
to file election complaints In response to
long lines and delays at campus voting sites in the Nov.
2 election, A.S. officers are preparing complaints to the San
Diego County Office of the Registrar and the California secretary
of state to urge organizational reforms in future elections.
County Registrar Sally McPherson cited “big registration
drives at the last minute” as the reason for the long
waits on Nov. 2. A.S. President Jenn Pae says UCSD reached
its goal of registering 3,000 new voters. According to the
A.S., the registrar’s office only doubled the amount
of booths at each site from the initial five to 10, which was
not adequate enough to make the lines move faster. MORE
Roosevelt
student found dead
in her apartment An Eleanor Roosevelt
College sophomore died after ingesting self-administered over-the-counter
sleeping medication on the
evening of Nov. 15, police believe.
Her roommate contacted the UCSD Police Department after discovering
her body in their Oceania Hall apartment,
according to Sergeant Bob Jones. “
She was pronounced deceased at the scene and, because it is
an unattended death, this requires a coroner’s investigation
as well,” Jones said. “Pending the findings of
the coroner’s office, it is an apparent suicide.” MORE
