Suddenly
Tuesday isn’t just library grind and classes anymore. Saunter
along Library Walk and Lyman Way between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each
week and you’ll find yourself at the new UCSD Farmer’s
Market. As well as fruits, vegetables and flowers, it features
homemade salsas, kettle corn, tapioca teas, breads, tamales, knishes,
crepes and olive oils. Launched in September, the idea is to provide
students, faculty and staff with fresh produce and specialty food
products previously unavailable on campus. Additionally, the market
provides a festive atmosphere, says Bonnie Harmon, manager of the
UCSD Sunshine Store and Farmer’s Market.
“It’s really a win-win situation. Customers get fresh
and flavorful products and also support the hard-working local
farmers,” says Janet Braver, owner of Grammy’s Granola,
which also sells fresh breads and cookies. She bakes 60 pounds
of granola and 50 loaves of bread a week for markets.
So what is the most popular product? “[Students]
cleaned me out
of pumpkin bread within an hour,” Braver says. “Must
be their sweet tooth.” That would also explain the long,
snaking line for crepes next door. Come see for yourself, and bon
appetit!
