So
now they’ve had a quarter to settle in, does anyone know
what the PCYNH on their class schedule means? Everyone knows where
CTR (Center Hall) is. And of course, there’s good old HSS
(Humanities and Social Sciences Building). But PCYNH? Was this
some registrar’s joke? Turns out PCYNH is just shorthand
for the newest lecture hall on campus- Pepper Canyon Hall. Located
by Sixth College and the Gilman Parking Structure, the gleaming
blue-green rectangle is 69,000 square feet and houses five classrooms
and approximately 165 offices and conference rooms. The $18,000 four- floor “multipurpose” building, as
deemed by its planners, was completed in September after two and
a half year construction period. “The building was conceived
because the university needed ‘flex’ space, “ said
J.R. Dial, the building’s Architect for Facilities and Construction. “Flex” areas
are interim space for transitioning departments and offices. Right
now, Sixth College and the Rady School of Management occupy the
second and third floors, respectively, with lecture halls on the
ground floor.
The stylish building is distinctive in its modern sharp corners
and sea-green glass exterior. A grand staircase greets students
in the center of the building. All staircase rails feature teak
and stainless steel, as well as other special materials to last
longer against the salty ocean breeze. A sturdy defense against
the Pacific weather for a building that is the color of the ocean.
Come see it for yourself!
