If a tree falls in a forest and there’s nobody there to hear,
does it make a sound? In this instance we’re the ones sounding
off. Our eucalyptus article (Tree Wars, in the January issue) provoked
us to search for victims of the latest winter storms. Sadly, we found
that 103 trees had fallen or were so severely damaged they had to
be cut down, and 95 of these were eucalypti. Other casualties included
Bushy Yeat, Bottle Brush, Palm, Melaleuca, Aleppo Pine and Torrey
Pine. Some of our sylvan stalwarts took dramatic dives. One 80-foot
eucalyptus fell across the big walk at the Price Center’s ATMs.
A 30-footer ambushed the natural gas pump station at the Central
Utility Plant, and a
40-footer took a lunge at the electrical transformer at Osler and
Gilman. All of which prompts the suspicion that there’s a pattern
here: money, gas and energy. Are they finally taking revenge for
their eviction from Library Walk? Revenge or not, we’re sad
to see them go.
