On
your mark … get set … don’t run! Instead, sink
into that recliner and join the second annual Couch-Potato Marathon.
This creative fund-raiser is being sponsored by the UCSD Huntington’s
Disease Center of Excellence in May.
“We started the Couch Potato Marathon last year to celebrate
Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month and raised $4,810,” says
Jody Corey-Bloom, M.D., Ph.D., the Center’s director. “These
funds helped us provide transportation to appointments, medical
care, respite care for family caregivers, genetic testing, physical
therapy and educational materials.”
Huntington’s Disease is a fatal, degenerative brain disorder
that strikes men and women primarily between the ages of 30 and
45. The condition eventually leads to death from complications
such as choking, infection or heart failure.
Couch-potato marathoners have the choice of several donation categories
ranging from the starter-kit $1 per kilometer sponsorship for every
kilometer not run, to $500 for not telling your loved ones just
how out of shape you really are.
Donations from the tongue-in-cheek pseudo-marathon will help improve
the lives of those affected by Huntington’s Disease. For
more information, phone (858) 622-5854 or visit http://hdcrp.ucsd.edu/hd/fund_raising.asp.
And laze around for a good cause.
