A lot, if you’re
as beloved as Patrick J. Ledden the late provost of Muir College.
An educator, administrator, mathematician
and devoted James Joyce scholar, he
inspired and mentored generations of students during
his 36 years of teaching at UCSD.
In February, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Richard
C. Atkinson, president emeritus of the University of California,
officially unveiled the signage designating H&SS 2250, the
auditorium in the Humanities and
Social Sciences Building, as Ledden Auditorium.
Ledden assumed duties as the second provost of
Muir College in 1987 and served for 16 years until his death at
age 67 in October 2003. In the words of Marshall Provost Cecil
Lytle, “He was a gentleman and a gentle man, but he was a
tiger, too.”
