Adding
a new twist to the phrase “crash course,” nearly 1,000
spectators gathered behind straw bales on the hill between Peterson
Hall and Geisel Library to cheer their favorite boxcars in the
second annual Triton Junkyard Derby.

The campus police patrolled in a Junkyard Cruiser,
replete with siren and flashing light, but no hot pursuits were
reported (probably because they crashed after their second run).
Other ingenious creations ranged from a mock Hummer complete
with functioning LED headlights, radio and wheel spinners, to
a river kayak and jet ski on bicycle tires.
And three cheers for alumni who fielded the
multi-generational Road Rash, and the winning team Expansion
Phantom, which also included students and staff.
Presented by the UCSD Alumni Association and
Triton Engineering Student Council,s the Derby was part of this
year’s 23rd annual Sun God Festival. The event sold out
in two days with 16 teams and 160 NASCAR wannabes. Wanna learn
