Kudos to the following professors and researchers.
Three UCSD professors, William Bechtel, Paul A. Insel and Vivek
Malhotra, were named 2005 Fellows of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, the nation’s largest scientific
organization. They will be officially inducted on February 18,
during the 2006 AAAS Annual Meeting in St. Louis.
Bechtel, a professor of philosophy,
was cited “for fundamental contributions
to the philosophy of life and cognitive sciences.” Insel, a professor of
pharmacology, was cited “for fundamental contributions to the understanding
of adrenergic signaling.” And Malhotra, a professor of biology, was cited
by the Biological Sciences section for “pioneering molecular analysis of
Golgi complex assembly and disassembly during the cell cycle and the role of
protein kinase D in secretion.”
Trey Ideker, an assistant professor
of bioengineering at UCSD’s
Jacobs School
of Engineering, has been named one of
the nation’s top 35 innovators under age 35 by MIT’s Technology Review
magazine.
Patrick Patterson, a lecturer in the Department of History at the
UCSD, was awarded a 2004-2005 fellowship by the American Council
of Learned Societies (ACLS). Patterson’s
$25,000 fellowship grant is for postdoctoral research on the “Culture of
the Market and Everyday Life in Eastern Europe and the Balkans.”
