IR/PS:
Training Future “Citizens of the World”
For students at UCSD’s Graduate School of International Relations
and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), summer-abroad internships offer
an important step toward building their
future career success in business, government, and nonprofit organizations
throughout the world. These unpaid internships allow graduate students
an opportunity to expand their horizons and gain valuable real-world
experience. But, for many, the cost can be difficult to finance.
You can make a huge difference in
the lives of these students and their efforts to
be “citizens of the world” by becoming a Summer Internship
Program sponsor. Gifts from $1,300 to $1,800 help fund international
travel expenses and provide a small living stipend for students
studying in China, Japan, Korea and Latin America. In addition
to internship support, there are many levels of giving within the
IR/PS community. Recently ranked in the top ten among the nation’s best schools
for studying foreign
affairs, IR/PS is the only professional school of international
relations in the UC system. Established in the mid 1980s, today
the school plays a key role in UCSD’s renewed focus on globalization
and international activities.

Innovative
Partnership with Mexico Launched
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox recently unveiled plans for a major
partnership between
UCSD and Mexico—one of the first such collaborations in the UC system.
The partnership will focus on four major initiatives to improve the quality of
life for citizens of the United States and Mexico. Initial funding was provided
by local business and academic leaders, including San Diego Padres owner John
Moores and former UCSD Chancellor Richard Atkinson.
Recent
Gifts
Donald and Darlene Shiley have provided a recent gift of $5 million
in support
of a planned expansion of the Shiley Eye Center’s clinical space. The expansion
will provide additional examination rooms in response to a steady growth in patients.
Fisher Scientific and its CEO Paul Montrone—long-time sponsors
of the Chancellors’ Challenge 5K—honored fellow event
sponsor Charlie Robins by endowing the Mary Louise and Charlie
Robins Scholarship Fund at UCSD.
Robert Glushko, Ph.D. ’79, donated $250,000 for graduate
fellowships in the Cognitive Science Department and committed an
additional $250,000 as a one-to-one match to challenge other alumni
and friends to support the department. For more information, call
