University construction hits a wall,
hammers on - Oct. 24, 2005 UCSD’s Rady School of Management was initially touted as
the first University project to be fully paid for through private
funds in 2001. Come September this year, Chancellor Marye Anne
Fox had to request a budget augmentation from the UC Board of Regents
to allow UCSD to throw $12.5 million from campus funds into the
project. MORE
A.S. Council pulls plug on SRTV - Nov.
7, 2005 The months-long
debate over free speech and broadcast decency came to a head late
last week, when angry student leaders ordered administrators to
pull the plug on Student-Run Television, taking the station off
the air. A visibly upset A.S. Vice President of Finance Greg Murphy, ’07,
made the call to Triton Cable operators to stop the station’s
signal shortly after 10 p.m. on Nov. 3. He later had to confront
angry SRTV members outside the station’s office. MORE
Federal loans again on chopping block
- Nov. 28, 2005 After turning
down legislation that would have stunted Pell Grant growth, the
U.S. House of Representatives proceeded to cut student aid, passing
a bill that reduces funding of federal student loans by $14.3 billion.
The downsizing is part of a “budget reconciliation” process
to reduce the federal deficit by $50 billion. In the report, the
Congressional Budget Office concluded that the bill would force
a change in interest rates on student loans, which would inflate
student borrowing costs by $5.5 billion. MORE
Sting operation nabs pub - Dec. 1, 2005 Porter’s Pub faces
a possible fine up to $3,000 and temporary suspension of its liquor
license after an employee sold alcohol to a minor without requesting
identification. In an undercover sting operation led by San Diego
Police Department vice operations Detective Larry Darwent, an underage
volunteer was sent into the pub to purchase a beer on Nov. 17.
The employee was immediately fired and must appear in court on
Jan. 19. She faces a misdemeanor charge and a fine of up to $1,000. MORE
Who’s Driving Doug?
Two buddies, a road trip to Las Vegas and a girl, all sound like
a recipe for a wild ride. For Michael Carnick, ’07, it
was a recipe for a screenplay that won him $25,000. MORE
Surf on Our Turf
Newsweek may have dubbed us the “Hottest in Science” but
let’s not forget that Sports Illustrated once named us top
surf school. And yet, strangely, UCSD has never had a surf shop.
That was until John Lembach saw an opportunity and began working
with John Muir College officials to open up Muir Surf & Sport. MORE
