Newsweek may have dubbed us the “Hottest in Science” but let’s
not forget that Sports Illustrated once named us top surf school.
And yet, strangely, UCSD has never had a surf shop. That was until
John Lembach saw an opportunity and began working with John Muir
College officials to open up Muir Surf & Sport.
Located at the John Muir College student center, Muir Surf & Sport
sells wetsuits, boards and other gear for those who crave the wave
all year long. Lembach also offers an off-campus surfboard ding-repair
service on the 15th of each month.
For those who would rather stay on land, there is a service station
located outside the store for repairing and customizing skateboards.
Students can also order snowboards and other winter gear from catalogues
in the store.
“We basically have everything on this campus. We have a
bike shop, a bookstore and restaurants. The only thing we didn’t
have was a surf shop,” Lembach says. “The one thing
I hear from students is, God I wish we had this last year.”
Lembach, a Baltimore, Maryland, native, first learned to surf
when he attended San Diego State University eight years ago. He
opened Muir Surf & Sport in September and says it is a place
where students can come by between classes to watch videos, check
out the products, or play his guitar.
But if the waves are pumping, don’t
expect him to be cooped up inside. There’ll be a sign on the door that says, “gone surfin’.”
