DECaF Buzz With 10 corporate sponsors
and about
100 volunteers, there’s no getting around that this year’s
Disciplines of Engineering Career Fair (DECaF) was a hit. The February
event raised $36,000 through corporate sponsorships and registration
fees, all of which will benefit the student organizations that make
up the Triton Engineering Student Council. MORE

that “cookie” and “Santa Claus” are derived
from Dutch? Have you ever eaten stroopwafels (sweet syrup waffles)?
If not, a visit to the Dutch conversation table at Eleanor Roosevelt
College’s Café Ventanas will give you a taste of life

VC Watson Eases Stance on Booze – January
12, 2006 Vice
Chancellor of Student Affairs Joseph W. Watson has said he would
allow the
presence of alcohol at campus events sponsored by the A.S. Council
under the condition that proper security measures are implemented,
reversing a policy that has kept recent Sun God
festivals officially dry. The policy change
follows the release of the Undergraduate Student Experience Report
in September. MORE
Athletic Funds Fall Into the Red – February
21, 2006 The UCSD athletics
department reported falling approximately $275,000 in the red during
the 2004-05
fiscal year, according to Vice Chancellor
of Student Affairs Joseph W. Watson. The
gap between revenues and expenses can
be linked to many factors, including the
increased expenses the department faced after moving from NCAA
Division III to Division II, according to Watson. MORE
Sex Still Banned from SRTV– March 9, 2006 Campus administrators, establishing new policies
for the use of Student-Run Television’s cable network,
remained steadfast in barring sexual nudity, but promised the
return
of the station during the daytime if the rules were adopted. For
the first time since the
station’s shutdown in November, the University defined “graphic
depictions
of sexual activity involving nudity.” MORE
A.S. Pres confronts Admin over sex ban – March
16, 2006
A.S. President Christopher Sweeten has publicly spoken out against
the University’s “appropriate use policy” for
Triton Cable, which bars graphic images of sexual activity and,
during certain hours, profanity
on the campus’ cable network. The policy came in response
to SRTV’s broadcast of pornography in November, which resulted
in its shutdown. MORE
Everything Old
is New Again
Did you ever wish for a new study space, away from the throngs
at Price Center or Geisel? With the completion of phase one of
the Old Student Center expansion, students can now stake study
territories in the facility’s new student lounge—surrounded
by glass walls, with computers and a fireplace, they can curl up
in comfortable sofa chairs.
Part of the University Centers Expansion Project, the new facility
now includes the Women’s Center and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual
Transgender Resource Center on the second floor. Underneath, Groundwork
Bookstore has opened its doors to a much larger space than its
previous location. A Thai restaurant will also open in September.
Planning for the restaurant included surveying students
on their food preferences, and
according to Gary Ratcliff, the University Centers director, Thai
food
got top billing. The University Centers Advisory Board finally
settled on Royal Thai, a restaurant that already has a location
in downtown La Jolla. “It had the best tasting food, lowest
prices, most diverse menu, and was willing to spend the most money
to build out its restaurant,” says Ratliff. The second phase of the expansion will include improvements to
the existing Student Center, UCSD Bike Shop, General Store Co-op and Food Co-op. The Food Co-op has
already opened a satellite location in the Price Center where
students can
get hot vegetarian meals, sandwiches
and organic juices.
