Poetry,
short narratives, historical features and student quotes fill the
pages of student magazine Gach Noi. Literally meaning “to
build a connection,” the quarterly magazine reminds Vietnamese
students at UCSD of their culture. Gach Noi grew out of the Vietnamese
Student Association in 1990 and has since become a separate organization.
Originally a news sheet of a few pages, Gach Noi has grown into
a 100-page color magazine. Each quarter, magazine staff collect
and sift through student-authored articles in English and Vietnamese.
The magazine is distributed at UCSD, but staff members also bring
copies to Vietnamese cultural festivals, fundraising events and
community colleges.
Gach Noi is funded through A.S. and advertisements, and Managing
Editor Katie Nguyen, ’08, says that many in the Vietnamese
community are both impressed by the magazine’s quality and
supportive of the project.
