All That Jazz
Ray Suen, ’07, has played in some of the better-known music
venues in San Diego, from the House of Blues to the Casbah, and
all before the age of 21. Suen was three when he asked his parents
for music lessons. Since then, he has learned to play the violin,
guitar and mandolin and has performed with the San Diego Youth
Symphony, the Civic Youth Orchestra and the La Jolla Symphony.
Suen came to UCSD as a biology major and thought about going
into medicine. It wasn’t until he met Joanie Mendenhall,
a local musician, during his freshman year that he began to see
another side of music. Mendenhall, a member of folk-rock group
Matt Currerri and the Ex-friends, recruited Suen and connected
him with some of San Diego’s established musicians. In
an article published last winter, the San Diego Union-Tribune called Suen “the secret weapon of the San Diego indie music
scene.”
“Finding out about the Hillcrest and North Park music scene was
incredible,” Suen says. “I’ve been able to
play with so many people and to play different kinds of music.”
Suen has been working on albums with the Ex-Friends and Gregory
Page, but what he savors most is live performance. Going into
his last year of college, Suen says he wants to improve as
a jazz musician but is still unsure how big a role music will
play
in his future.
“
I’m definitely at a crossroads with what I want to do with
music,” Suen says. “But I couldn’t be happier
doing what I do.”
