What do wireless digital assistants, art and green buildings have
in common? No, not Starbucks! Try Sixth College’s first graduating
class of over 200 students. In 2002, the
incoming freshmen were issued wireless enabled HP Jornada personal assistants to participate in a new
digital style of college orientation called “explorientation.” With
these hand-held devices, Sixth College students worked together to
get to know their new campus community as well as each other. This
inaugural class also mixed cement and created multi-media projects
while going through a yearlong, Core Program dedicated to the study
of culture, art and technology. Sixth’s future neighborhood
is envisioned as analogous to a city’s downtown, with a mix
of old and new dorms, classrooms, coffee houses and meeting spaces
laid out on either side of the planned Light Rail Transit station
at Pepper Canyon. For more information on Sixth, visit www.sixthcollege.ucsd.edu.
