I
would like to extend a special thank you to all of our supportive
alumni and friends who generously contributed to the success of
The Campaign for UCSD: Imagine What’s Next. I am pleased
to report we surpassed our seven-year $1 billion goal a month ahead
of our scheduled conclusion. UC San Diego is the region’s
first university to top this ambitious fundraising milestone, and
one of the youngest in the nation to reach this goal.
Nearly 30 percent of the funds raised during the campaign came
from UC San Diego alumni. You started it! Your support created
the momentum to launch this campaign and see it through to a successful
conclusion. With your generous gifts, you have helped lay the groundwork
for the future of UCSD as we continue to deliver the local impact,
national influence and global reach of the region’s leading
research university.
The Campaign for UCSD was launched with a gift for a cancer center
and ended with a $34 million gift for cancer research. Campaign
gifts were also designated to build a new advanced cardiovascular
center at UCSD. These two centers alone have the potential to save
thousands of lives through cutting-edge research and patient care.
Funds raised during the campaign are also being used to enrich
life. The Conrad Prebys Music Center, which will feature state-of-the-art
computer and sound technology, is currently under construction
in the heart of our campus and is scheduled to open in two years.
The center will attract musicians from around the globe and serve
as a bridge to our community.
Campaign gifts also helped create two new professional schools
on campus. The Rady School of Management is filling a critical
need for management training for experienced professionals in the
high-tech and biotech industries. The Skaggs School of Pharmacy
and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the only public pharmacy school in
Southern California, is helping address the critical shortage of
pharmacists in the state.
Most important, gifts for student support will help our bright
scholars, the future leaders who will tackle global challenges
such as climate change and growing health needs.
We are pleased that the market value of the UCSD endowment more
than doubled during the campaign, allowing us to fund a wide range
of donor-designated needs including student scholarships and endowed
chairs that help us attract top-notch faculty members. Our distinguished
and accomplished faculty are leaders in their fields, educating
our students, and passing on our tradition of innovation and collaboration.
UCSD has met important funding goals for research, academic programs
and health sciences. Now we must turn our attention to supporting
the University’s ongoing efforts and continual need to recruit
and retain faculty, and to finance undergraduate and graduate scholarships.
The state of California provides only 12 percent of our total funding
so we must increasingly rely on gifts from alumni, parents and
University friends. We appreciate your support and your commitment
to ensure UCSD remains at the forefront of academic and research
excellence.
