Preuss School, UCSD's chartered high school, has a lot to celebrate.
Newsweek just named it in the top-10 list of best high schools
in America. Ranked ninth out of 1,200, it was the only high school
in California to land a spot in the top 25. The rankings were
based on the average number of college-level tests taken per
student, including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate.
Preuss was designed to provide an intensive college-prep
education for motivated low-income students who would be the first
in their family to attend college. And a Preuss education is demanding,
with over 30 additional minutes of classroom instruction a day
and 18 extra school days a year compared to traditional public
schools. Each of the 750 students is required to take six AP exams
in U.S. history, U.S. government, English language, English literature,
biology and chemistry. Over 150 UCSD students volunteer as tutors
and the results speak for themselves. A staggering 96 percent of
graduates are accepted to four-year universities, including all
of the UC campuses and many Ivy Leagues.
