Three Friars Brewing is a Carlsbad-based startup founded by three Rady FlexMBA alumni, as an extension of their Lab to Market project. The students originally discussed commercializing a new technology to transport beer, but decided instead to develop an innovative business plan for brewing bespoke beer in San Diego. Their first beer, Brown Robe Ale, is a local and sustainable brew, which is custom-made for clients in a numbered limited edition. The school had a chance to sample the beer at the school’s Oktoberfest celebration and Rady partnered with them for a limited edition to be used for speaker gifts.
Joe Baroldi, M.B.A. ’07, a founder and the master brewer for Three Friars Brewing decided to set up the company based upon the common interests of
the team and the collaborative dynamic they shared while working on their Lab2Market project. The management team includes Leif Christofferson, M.B.A. ’07, and Brian Campbell, M.B.A. ’07.
“
Rady is focused on
entrepreneurship and risk-taking, and I realized we had a viable business concept with the school and alumni as our test market. While small,
we have developed plans to grow the company and set up commercial production,” says Baroldi.
