Undergraduate Students To Experience “Eureka!” Moments Thanks to Generous Donors

The opportunity to work with leading researchers and scientists who have made an impact locally, nationally and even globally is a key reason many students choose to attend UC San Diego. However, many undergraduate students must work to support their educational endeavors, leaving little time to pursue such unpaid, extracurricular research opportunities.
The Division of Biological Sciences, which currently boasts nearly 5,000 undergraduates in eight majors, is working to lift this financial burden and provide more real-world research activities for undergraduate students with the development of a novel educational initiative—the Eureka! Program.

Making its debut this summer, the Eureka! Program will deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of
the relevance of biological sciences in the health sciences industry. Through the seminar series entitled, “Journeys in Discoveries: Personal Stories From the Bench to the Bedside,” students will hear from life scientists how the concepts they learn as students are applied in industry
settings—from small start-up biotech companies to large pharmaceutical giants—to develop treatment for diseases.

The Eureka! Program also offers scholarships to allow students to gain first-hand experience in translational biology. The scholarships enable students to participate in supplementary research opportunities not only at UC San Diego but also at local biotech firms, providing invaluable practical know-how that can translate into successful careers.

Recent Gifts

• The Nicholas Family Endowed Chair in Greek Modern History was recently established thanks to generous gifts from Penelope and George Nicholas, with their two sons James and Nick, as well as support from the San Diego Greek community. The $500,000 endowment funds the final chair in a trio of faculty chairs covering Greek History from circa 800 BC to the modern era. Faculty chairs are essential to attracting and retaining outstanding professors at UC San Diego, such as Thomas Gallant, the distinguished scholar who now occupies this chair.

The Sophie and Arthur Brody Foundation recently gave $100,000 to support study
efforts at the Sophie and Arthur Brody Laboratory on Optic Nerve Biology at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center of UC San Diego’s Shiley Eye Center. The funds will help facilitate the discovery and translation of
innovative research to prevent and cure
glaucoma blindness.

As part of a planned gift, the late Robert Ledell donated more than $800,000 to
create The Ledell Family Endowed Scholarship. The endowment provides valuable undergraduate scholarships for deserving UC San Diego students with majors in the Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences or Engineering.
