On Friday October 17, students, faculty, staff and alumni will lace up their running shoes for the thirteenth annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars. Participants will start at the North Campus Field then weave through the Eucalyptus-lined course as they race in support of undergraduate scholarships.
Since its establishment in 1996 by then Chancellor Robert C. Dynes, the challenge for scholarships has grown to include 1500 registered participants, and this year aims to surpass the $2 million funding mark.
This year will also host the first official “Chancellor’s Champion” competition, in which one student, faculty, staff and alumni representative will compete for the title of “Chancellor’s Champion,” as well as a $500 prize to benefit the group he or she represents.
Every year, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox formulates her own personal challenge, which has ranged from matching student registration funds to adding $5,000 for every $50,000 gifted by sponsors and donors. Last year Fox contributed $45,000 toward student scholarships.
So why not dust off those sneakers and join us for a run through the Eucalyptus groves. And it’s all in a good cause. For more information go to: www.ucsd.edu/5k.
