A member of the Rady School of Management’s inaugural class, Jan Tuttleman, M.B.A. ’06, Ph.D., feels a deep connection with UC San Diego. After ­completing her post-doctorate work at the University of California, San Francisco in 1989, Tuttleman moved to San Diego to focus on her family. She ­remained active in the community and founded a corporation to fund seed-stage biotechnology ­companies. Once her ­children were grown, Tuttleman decided to pursue an M.B.A. in preparation of her next career move. When she learned about UC San Diego’s new ­business school, Tuttleman knew it was where she belonged.

Tuttleman’s campus support dates back more than a decade, when she established the Michael Kriegler Memorial Lecture in Molecular Medicine in honor of her late ­husband. Since then, Tuttleman has devoted significant time and resources to the Rady School, serving on the management school’s alumni board and giving generously to its facilities. In her honor, the dean’s ­conference room bears Tuttleman’s name. As vice ­president of marketing and business ­development for HUYA Biotechnology International, Tuttleman continues her commitment into the second phase of the Rady School’s expansion, which will further enhance its impact on local, national and international industry.

Why did you choose to attend the Rady School of Management?
Because the Rady School educates leaders in innovation, especially in the science
and technology fields.

How did you decide to support themanagement school’s facilities?
I have supported the Rady School since it was established. As a student, I was highly impressed with the school and when I ­became aware of its capital needs, I helped raise funding and gave personally. I like to show support for organizations that enable me to achieve my goals in life.

What is your philosophy on philanthropic giving?
I come from a family with a long history of philanthropy and I’ve carried on that ­tradition. It is also important for me to be a role model for the next generation—­especially my daughters—so that they will carry on the tradition as well. Supporting the communities where we live and people less fortunate than us is really an obligation.

Why do you believe alumni should support UC San Diego?
It is a great way to stay connected and ­remain a part of the innovation on campus. UC San Diego has a young alumni base, so gifts really matter a great deal. Philanthropy is very much appreciated here.
