As we began the new year, I had the pleasure of participating in two milestone gatherings. We had our first annual Young Alumni Reunion, which was closely followed by Roger Revelle’s 100th birthday celebration. This is also the year when the committees to celebrate UC San Diego’s 50th anniversary, from 2010 through 2011, kick into high gear. And, this year is the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s Origin of the Species. Already, you are probably asking: “Where is he headed with this?” But bear with me for a bit, I think I can pull it all together.

Marriage Made in Heaven?
First, I must say it is about time. As UCSD students and alumni are ‘Tritons’ it seems appropriate, although oddly late in the game, to finally have a Triton statue on campus.

But if your cartoon is any indication, the Triton has started off with a little too much pitchfork and has the Sun God on the run. Can’t we all just get along? Perhaps the campus should advocate some counseling for the Triton in order to help him understand our modern concept of peaceful coexistence, and possibly even mentoring. And from the looks of it, the Sun God may need some help standing up to and standing with his (her?) fellow god. (I may be a bit biased. I always had a soft spot for the Sun God and still keep Sun God postcards around as a reminder of our beloved campus’ wacky art and architecture.)

My challenge to the current UCSD class: help them get along.

DEJA VU

Some updates on our recent stories.

In the somewhat uncertain world of NASA Shuttle launches, the STS-125 mission, on which Megan McArthur, Ph.D. ’02, was to fly to the Hubble Space Telescope, is now targeted for May 12. But as they say, watch that space. That launch date could change again.

In our “Looking Back”column in the January issue, Carrie Rickey, Muir, ’74, M.F.A. ’76 remembered Manny Farber, artist, film critic and esteemed UCSD professor, who died in August 2008. Those of you who watched the Oscars on February 22, 2009, may have seen him honored in the “In Memoriam” montage. As a film critic, Farber’s critiques had appeared in Time, The Nation, The New Republic, Artforum, Film Culture and other magazines.

And Carrie Ricky, the writer of the piece on Manny also has news. Her Flickgrrl blog has been online since 2007, but has recently changed address. Rickey has been The Philadelphia Inquirer’s film critic for 21 years and her blog is as passionate and edgy as her column.
