Theodor Geisel (aka:Dr. Seuss, best known for works such as The Cat in the Hat, and The Grinch)

Located near the middle of the UCSD campus, Geisel Library is named in honor of Audrey and Theodor Geisel in recognition of their contributions as well as their devotion to improving literacy.

# 5. What is UCSD's school mascot?

UCSD's unofficial school mascot is the Triton. According to Greek mythology, a Triton is a merman, and the demigod of the sea. He is represented as human down to his waist, with the tail of a fish, and equipped with a "trident"-- a three-pronged spear.

# 6. When did UCSD first open?

Originally the University of California, La Jolla, UCSD was renamed in 1960 - the year that it officially opened to the first graduate class. It wasn't until 1964 that the first undergraduate program began at First College (renamed Revelle College a year later.)

Music tree, literary tree and third tree.

There are about five hours of material on both the music and literary tree. 

The third tree, often called the "silent tree" by students and alum, is located near the entrance of Geisel Library.

Eleanor Roosevelt

The new Eleanor Roosevelt College opened this fall.  The $106 million project includes an International House with housing for over 258 students, residence halls for 460 students and apartments and townhouses for 520 students.

Economics

Clive W. J. Granger and Robert F. Engle, long-time collaborators in the Department of Economics at the UCSD, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for their pioneering work in statistical modeling of economic data, known as econometrics. MORE
