UC San Diego now offers alumni a new and improved email service that allows you to send and receive messages to your personal or business mailbox of choice.

Whether you are a recent graduate, a current alum or a staff/faculty alum departing the university, this free service enables you to stay in touch with classmates and other members of the Triton community and offers a clear association with UC San Diego even after you leave. A non-UC San Diego email address (i.e. yahoo or gmail) is necessary in order to activate your permanent UC San Diego forwarding address.

Log in or register for Tritons Connect (please ensure your affiliation is set to Alumni, you may need to update this from student if you are a recent graduate). Then Log in or register for a Tritons Connect account. Then go to Resources on the left-hand side of the page. Click on “Alumni Email for Life” folder and follow next steps.

  • Class of 2017 or after and Staff/Faculty Alumni: Your address will forward to your linked mailbox within one business day.
  • Class of 2016 or before: You will receive an email notification with your newly generated alias within three business days.

New Graduates

Log in or register for Tritons Connect and ensure your affiliation is set to Alumni. Please back up all emails and contacts saved in your campus mailbox before signing up. Once you register for Alumni Email for Life, you will only receive emails sent to your personal mailbox that you link your address to. You will no longer receiving emails to your campus mailbox.

What is the Alumni Email for Life service?

Alumni Email for Life is a permanent email address from which Alumni can send and receive emails. It is a forwarding service provided exclusively to our UC San Diego Alumni to help fellow Tritons, friends and family stay in contact with you.

Who is eligible for an Alumni Email for Life address?

UC San Diego graduates who have received Bachelors, Master’s and/or a Doctorate degree are eligible.

*UC San Diego Health Sciences Staff/Faculty Alumni are not eligble to keep the alias after separating from the university due to privacy concerns. Please contact UC San Diego Alumni at for any questions.

I am a current staff/faculty member, but not a graduate of UC San Diego. Am I eligible for Alumni Email for Life?

I am about to graduate. Can I keep my email address after graduation?

You can continue using your existing student email address after you have graduated by connecting it to a non-UC San Diego email address. Sign up for Alumni Email for Life to link your address to a non-UC San Diego email address. You will start to receive mail to that address and will have the ability to send mail as your address through the non-UC San Diego mailbox. Please refer to your email service provider's for instructions to send mail as.

Is there a cost to enroll for Alumni Email for Life?

Nope! All UC San Diego graduates who have received Bachelors, Master’s and/or a Doctorate degree are eligible for this free service.

How do I enroll in the Alumni Email for Life service and when will it be active?

Log in or register for a Tritons Connect account. Then go to Resources on the left-hand side of the page. Click on “Alumni Email for Life” folder. Fill out the form and submit. It will take up to three business days to process. You will receive email notifications once the address is generated and ready to use.

After initial set up, can I update the email account I’ve linked to?

Yes, you will be able to change the email account it is linked to after your initial set up.

Is this an email account?

No, this is only an email address that is linked to an existing email account (i.e. gmail, yahoo). You will not have access to a separate inbox. All messages sent to your address will be directed to your linked email account’s inbox.

Once you activate your Alumni Email for Life address, all messages sent to your Alumni Email for Life address will be re-directed to the email address of your choice.

ATTENTION: Many financial and government institutions have started implmenting the Domain-based Message Authentication (DMARC) policy. This increased security policy prevents the mail delivery to forwarded mailboxes as it requires the sent address to match the mailbox address. To avoid any notification and authentication issues with your financial and governemtn accounts, please use your primary email address and not your email alias.

How can I send an email from my address?

In order to send mail as your new address, you will need to establish an alias or add additional address within your existing email account’s setting. You will receive your login information in your Alumni Email for Life confirmation email once your new address is generated. These login credentials will allow you to authenticate with an SMTP server and send emails from your address.

After you link your Alumni Email for Life address to an email account, you can configure your email account (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook or Apple Mail) to use an SMTP (or outgoing) server, using the provided login credentials. The provided credentials will allow you the option to send emails from your address or your existing email address.

To do so, you will need to open your email client and specify as your SMTP (or outgoing) mail server. Typically, the SMTP server information can be found in your email client under menu items called Options, Preferences, or Tools. You should use port 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS).

Once this has been configured, you will have the option to select which address you would like to send from. Many email service providers allow users to select a default address as well. Please check with your email service provider for more details.

Will my Alumni Email for Life address allow me to link to multiple email accounts?

No, your address will only allow you to select one email account from which you can send and receive mail.

Can I set up more than one email address?

No, graduates are assigned only one Alumni Email for Life address.

Can I choose or change my email address?

No, you will receive a new email address which is generated based on the following campus naming conventions. If the first option isn't available, the next option is used:

  • First initial and last name: gbluefin
  • First initial, middle initial/part of your first name, and last name: gtbluefin
  • First initial, number, and last name: g2bluefin
  • First initial, middle initial, last initial, and 3-digit number: gtb007

Please note: Recent graduates (Class of 2017+) and staff/faculty alumni can continue using their current email after leaving campus, but will need to link it to a personal email account.

Why can’t I have the same email I had when I was a student at UC San Diego?

If you graduated earlier than 2017, the university unfortunately retired your student account. Student addresses were deactivated for a period of time before they were reissued to new students who fit the naming criteria. Your new email address will be generated based on your first, middle, and last name.

How can I check to see what my email address is, or where it is forwarding?

Once your Alumni Email for Life address is generated, you will receive an email to your linked email address with your address inside it. If you no longer have access to this inbox or are unsure which inbox this email is stored in, please contact us at

Does Alumni Email for Life limit the size of email attachments?

Your Alumni Email for Life email attachment size limit is based on your email service provider. Please check with your email service provider for size limitations.

How come I'm not receiving an email I send myself?

You will not be able to send yourself an email using the email address it is linked to. The email will be sent in an endless forarding loop and will not be delievered to your mailbox. When sending an email to yourself, please send it using your actual email address and not the address.

I already have a email forwarding address. How is that different from this new Alumni Email for Life service?

Your forwarding address will still forward emails to your selected mailbox. However, if you sign up for the new Alumni Email for Life service, you will be able to send and receive emails from your new address.

I have an email forwarding address. Will the alumni forwarding address and service be terminated?

You will still be able to receive mail from your forwarding address. The messages will be mailed to the email inbox that was chosen at the time. However, we will no longer be issuing new email addresses. If you need to update the email inbox that it is forwarding to, please contact us at
